What is ARFID Treatment?

To better understand how ARFID Treatment can help, first, we need to understand ARFID.

What is ARFID?

ARFID, or Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, causes a person to limit the variety and amount of foods they consume. Unlike other disorders, it is not because of a concern for body image. But factors like lack of interest in food, sensory sensitivity, and fear of something going wrong while eating.

What makes ARFID difficult to diagnose or treat is that it is not always an obvious issue. We can see behaviors as picky eating, and even as other eating disorders. One of the biggest indications of ARFID is the reasoning behind the avoidance of food. The person may feel they may choke or vomit while eating outside of their safe food. Certain textures can also be a negative factor.

Reduced variety in a diet can cause several health issues. Children can sometimes not gain the weight they normally should and stunt their growth. Depending on the ‘safe’ foods, the person may also miss out on essential nutrition. Leading to the development of other medical issues.

Having ARFID is difficult, and the road to recovery takes effort. But Nutrition Braved specializes in providing ARFID treatment. Helping patients improve their relationship with food, and over time, regain their ability to feel safe eating a variety of foods.

While it is not fully understood what causes a person to develop ARFID. Treatments are available to help patients understand the disorder. To navigate through the process of making them more comfortable with a more nutritious diet.

Nutrition Braved is ready to help you every step of the way. If you would like to learn more, please call 630-474-5321 and speak with one of our Naperville team members. ARFID Treatment in Naperville

ARFID treatment begins with getting to know our patient. To understand their personal experiences and learn more about how they view food. With this, we can work with them in developing a care plan that can lead them to an improved relationship with their food.

Treatments can help patients focus on recognizing thoughts and behaviors that are problematic. Focusing on reducing fear and anxiety about food. Becoming more comfortable with textures and other sensory issues.

Another unique opportunity for ARFID treatment with Nutrition Braved, is that our ARFID experts offer a Caregiver support group for those with a loved one who has ARFID, this group is offered weekly, with our dietitian Jenn Sapko, and you can find more information about this on the Groups page of our website or by emailing Jenn (jenn@nutritionbraved.org)

The most important thing to remember is that any treatment takes time. There will not be an overnight improvement. The best thing a patient can do is stick to their care plan, focusing on improving their perception of food, and simply taking it one day at a time. Improvement will be a process, but dedication and discipline are key.
